In January 2024, an exceptionally rare 1987 Buick GNX with only 282 miles on its odometer was auctioned for a staggering $231,000. This car, which had been in storage since it was new, recently re-emerged, shining like it did on the showroom floor after its first wash and polish in 36 years.
The GNX, part of a limited production run of just 547 units, is revered among collectors and enthusiasts. Stored in a garage, this particular GNX collected dust over the years despite being well-protected from the elements. The vehicle's new owner, who bought it at Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale 2024 sale, tasked Legendary Motorcar with the purchase and subsequent restoration to showroom condition.
The clean-up process, documented on video, shows how even minimal dust can dull a car's appearance over time. Despite this, the GNX's paint and overall condition were in remarkably good shape, needing only a thorough cleaning to restore its original luster. Post-cleaning, the GNX looked brand new, a testament to its preservation and the quality of the restoration work.
The Buick GNX is one of the most sought-after muscle cars due to its limited production and performance pedigree. Developed in collaboration with McLaren Performance Technologies/ASC, it features a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 engine capable of producing up to 300 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, despite being officially rated lower by Buick. This powertrain, combined with a unique suspension setup, made the GNX a formidable sleeper car in its day, outpacing even the Porsche 930 and Ferrari F40 in quarter-mile times.
This freshly polished GNX now stands as the fifth-most expensive example ever sold at auction and remains one of the lowest-mileage units known. The highest-priced GNX, sold for $308,000 in 2022, had 568 miles on it. This pristine 1987 Buick GNX is a shining example of automotive preservation and the enduring appeal of classic American muscle.
